The Nowhere Man series (2017-2018) reproduced the play the Definition of Botong

 

<project Dialogue Vol.2- the Definition of Botong> is a study on 'Botong', the minimum standard of Korean society. For this purpose, about 3,000 people from Korea, England, Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands participated in the self-psychological test type Botong Test from 2013 to 2017 and based on the contents, various installations, sculptures, concepts, videos, and photos  and it has been announced as a publication work.

 

From the beginning of the survey in 2013 (13th Songeun Art Awards), artist Park paid attention to the anxiety of Koreans in Now Here is Nowhere (2016), a solo exhibition. and based on the contents of the questionnaire collected so far, Park commissioned a poetry collection, Island of Botong, from Taei, a language researcher and conceptual artist.  And I reconstructed the play  the Definition of Botong with the answer.

희곡 '보통의 정의'가 재현된 Nowhere Man 시리즈 (2017~2018)

 

<project Vol.2-보통의 정의>는 한국 사회의 최소한의 기준인 '보통'에 대한 연구이다. 이를 위해 제작한 자가심리 테스트 형시의 '보통검사'를 2013~2017까지 한국, 영국, 벨기에, 스페인, 네덜란드에서 3.000여명의 사람들이 참여했고 그 내용을 바탕으로 다양한 설치, 조각, 개념, 영상, 사진 그리고 출판작업으로 발표해 왔다. 

2013년에 처음 설문 조사를 시작한 시점에서 부터(13회 송은미술대상전) 그를 작가의 해석을 가미한 개인전  Now Here is Nowhere (2016)에서 한국인들의 불안을 주목했고,

그간 수집한 설문의 내용을 바탕으로 언어연구가이자 개념미술가엔 태이에게 시집 '통섭'을 의뢰했다. 그리고 나는 그 답변을 가지고 희곡 '보통의 정의'로 재구성했다. 

 

The lines of the play were relayed onto three screens, and the performer improvised movements according to the sentences that appeared.

 

희곡의 대사를 3대의 스크린에 릴레이 교차로 투사하고, 그 문장에 따라 퍼포머가 즉흥적으로 움직임을 선보였다.

The work written as a play based on the answers of the 'Botong Test' was later used in educational programs with the general public, such as 'Reading Room' (2017),  and was presented in the form of an installation work, and even in a gallery, the audience could read the play with their own voice.

A survey conducted from 3,000 people from 2013 to 2018, Botong Test is a self-test type psychological test in which the audience sets the standard for what they think is Botong and examines how well they fit into it.  It became the main content of project Dialogue Vol. 3-the Definition of Botong.

For the play the Definition of Botong, which is the content of this sound work, artist Park reconstructed the subjective answers to a questionnaire in which about 1,000 people defined Botong.
In the work, 8 actors play the prologue and chapters 1 and 2 of the play as a voice drama, which is distributed and reproduced through 8-channel speakers on the stage of a small theater with 160 seats.

On the stage of a conversation between 8 characters similar to Botong who can't be Botong, the audience naturally intervenes in this play as a character and thinks of the questions the author poses.

2013년에서 2018년까지 3,000여명에게서 진행한 설문 <보통 검사>는 관객이 스스로 생각하는 ‘보통’에 대한 기준을 정하고 자신은 얼마나 그에 해당되는지 살펴보는 자가 테스트형 심리테스트로 프로젝트 ‘대화’ Vol.3-<보통의 정의>의 주요 내용이 되었다.
이번 사운드 작업의 내용인 희곡 ‘보통의 정의’는 1,000여명의 사람들이 ‘보통’에 대해 정의한 설문의 주관식 답변을 박혜수 작가가 재구성하였다.
작품은 8명의 연극배우가 희곡의 프롤로그와 1,2 장을 보이스 드라마로 연기하고 이를 160석 규모의 소극장 무대에 8채널의 스피커로 분산되어 재생한다. ‘보통’이 될 수 없는, ‘보통’과 흡사한 8명의 인물들끼리 ‘보통’이 무엇인지, 누구인지 다투는 대화의 무대에 관객들은 자연스럽게 이 연극에 한 인물로 개입하며 작가가 던지는 질문을 생각하게 된다.

Park asked deaf actor Seojin Oh to act in this play. She thought that being different from others in Korean society means that it is not normal(Botong), and that disabled people are the ones who have to prove that they are normal at every moment, even though their bodies are just uncomfortable.

 

The play the Definition of Botong consists of a total of three chapters. Among them, chapters 1 and 2 are reconstructed by the audience of 1,000 subjective responses to “Botong” in the Botong Test, while the monologue in chapter 3 is a story about “Botong” that artist Hyesoo thinks.

 

작가는 이 이야기를 농인 배우 오서진씨에게 연기를 부탁했는데, 이는 대한민국 사회에서 남들과 다르다는 것은 곧 보통이 아니라는 의미이자 자신들 또한 다른 사람들과 다르지 않다는 것을 매순간 증명해야하는 이들이기 때문이다.

희곡<보통의 정의>는 총 3장으로 구성된다. 그 중 1,2 장은 '보통검사'에서 '보통'에 대한 주관식 답변 1000명의 답변을 작가가 재구성한 것이라면,  3장 독백은 작가 박혜수가 생각하는 '보통'에 대한 이야기이다.
